Happy New Year! Thanks to our supporters 2006 was a great year for People Protecting Animals & Their Habitats. The organization provided educational and vocational opportunities to hundreds of great people in Nicaragua, brought comfort to thousands of vulnerable animals and made many great new friends. PATH believes that by including animals in education programs and community development initiatives the lives of the world's most neglected animals can be improved. We have witnessed that the lives of animals are transformed when communities have the resources and opportunities to show their love and respect for them. We want to use this newsletter to honor a handful of the thousands of people and businesses that are working globally to make the world a more compassionate place for nonhuman animals Please visit the links provided and learn more about PATH's 2006 Heroes To Animals!

Farm Sanctuary
People protecting Animals and their habitats
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of industrialized farming and to encourage a new awareness and understanding about "farm animals." Over the years Farm Sanctuary has rescued thousands of animals, and educated millions of people about their plight. In addition to rescue and education programs, Farm Sanctuary advocates for laws and policies to prevent animal suffering and promote compassion - reaching out to legislators and businesses to bring about institutional reforms.

When Farm Sanctuary started in 1986, it was a fledgling, all volunteer organization that was funded by sales of veggie hot dogs from a VW van (yummy). Today, Farm Sanctuary is the nation's leading farm animal protection organization, with hundreds of thousands of supporters. Senator Edward Kennedy & Splash
People protecting Animals and their habitats People protecting Animals and their habitats
For four decades Senator Kennedy’s has consistently voted to protect the environment and nonhuman animals. In 2006 he wrote, My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington, D.C. The book tells the story of Senator Kennedy and his dog, "Splash" and a day in their life in the Senate. A Portuguese Water Dog, Splash is always at Senator Kennedy's side - in his office, at press conferences, in meetings at the Capitol and even right outside the Senate chamber. Told from Splash's point of view, this charming picture book not only takes readers through a full day in the Senator's life, but also explains how a bill becomes a law. My Senator and Me also includes biographies of Senator Kennedy and Splash.

Senator Kennedy donates proceeds from the book to charities including Read Boston, an organization that supports literacy in Boston public schools. Order Senator Kennedy’s book via http://www.strandbooks.com/profile/?isbn=0439650771

Andrea Runge

Andrea Runge with a street dog in Granada, Nicaragua.

One of the stars of Animal Cops/San Francisco, Officer Runge is a long time protector of animals and an eloquent advocate for the need of animal welfare programs in developing countries. Andrea, who previously worked for Greenpeace (lobbying Congress on nuclear issues affecting the environment) has worked as an animal control officer for San Francisco Animal Care and Control for the past decade. Andrea naturally brings people and organizations together - increasing the effectiveness of the animal care community. Andrea says - "In instances of animal abuse, attacks and rescues, animal control officers are first responders. My job is important, but I am only part of a team. The shelter staff, volunteers, wildlife rehabbers, rescue groups and adoptive families all have the same goal — that of improving the lives of animals. I really am honored to do what I love."
