October 2006

Hello friends,

We desperately need your help demonstrating that people and animals can thrive together in developing countries. PATH is partnering with the city of Granada, Nicaragua and Universidad de Ciecias Comerciales (UCC) to operate the first program in the world that legally enforces the treatment of working animals while providing those same animals with veterinary care at no cost! This program guarantees the safety, health and dignity of Granada’s working horses while encouraging economic growth. Throughout the world economic need is often used as a justification for animal cruelty and neglect. We at PATH believe that true sustainable economic development MUST protect not only the safety and dignity of people, but of all animals and flora as well! Please help us change how the world treats working animals!

PATH needs your donations to provide veterinary care, medications and nutritional supplements to the 1,200 working horses in Granada. Granada city officials can now request a PATH health certificate from horse owners and demand the horse be treated by PATH/UCC before the horse can return to work. This program is friendly to both the horses and the horse owners – many of who survive only through the income generated by the horses. This innovative program is the first of its kind globally and can truly only continue with your immediate financial support.

In an effort to address the severe shortage of trained veterinary professionals in Nicaragua, PATH is establishing a second scholarship fund. The Don E. Overton Scholarship (named after my late father) will join the existing Millicent Martinez Kondracke Scholarship as a sustainable solution to Nicaragua’s shortage of trained veterinary professionals. These scholarships pay all costs for local animal-loving students to attend UCC. Upon graduation PATH will offer the students positions as paid community veterinarians/veterinary technicians in Nicaragua.

Save an iguana – plant a tree in Nicaragua!

Finally, PATH has a goal of planting 2,000 trees and shrubs in Nicaragua during 2007. This with future habitat restoration projects will play a vital role in protecting the balance of the nation’s ecosystem. The number of species of mammals, birds and wildlife in the country is declining due habitat loss. The cost of this project is only $2,000. Your children’s school class can get involved by raising and donating funds – as well as using the event as an opportunity to learn about Nicaragua and tropical ecosystems.

The number of animals we help is limited only by available resources. In other words, the greater our resources, the more animals we can help. PATH needs your continued financial support. We also need donations of airline frequent flyer miles. We need veterinarians to donate equipment and supplies that they can do without. Please help us bring comfort and love to suffering animals.

PATH administrative staff receive no compensation – with the exception of local Nicaraguan employees, PATH is an all-volunteer 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt corporation operating in Nicaragua, Panama, Rwanda and the United States of America.

PATH’s mailing address has changed. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to our new permanent home at:
