Hello friends,

The photograph below sadly illustrates the desperate need for humane education in Nicaragua. This horse was shaved and then “tagged” over 60 times with a homemade branding iron. PATH veterinarian Pedro Caballero treated the horse using medications and supplies purchased with your donations. It is not (always) cruelty or indifference that causes nonhuman animals to be abused or neglected; it is often simply ignorance – people truly not understanding that nonhuman animals feel pain, shame and fear.

A nationwide humane education program is needed before the plight of Nicaragua's animals can truly be improved. PATH is committed to providing access to free Spanish language humane education materials throughout Nicaragua and Central America.
Earlier this year PATH produced 30,000 Spanish language horse-care posters and distributed them as inserts in Managua's La Hoy newspaper. These posters are now available for free download via our website www.ppath.org.

PATH now has the opportunity to run a ten-week series of humane education comics in Managua's La Hoy newspaper. PATH humane education coordinator Gabriela Rivera is working with cartoonists in Managua to produce the series. These comics will introduce children to likable animal characters and provide lessons on animal care, habitat protection and nonviolence. The comics will be pullout posters printed on sturdy paper so children to keep the comics to read again and again. PATH will make these materials available for free download through our website, as well as distributing copies via schools and animal feed stores. It is vital that PATH produce a large quantity of hard copies of these materials, as most children in Nicaragua do not have Internet access. La Hoy newspaper has agreed to include the comics in papers during a ten-week period between August and October 2006. PATH needs your help in raising $5,000 to meet the cost of printing the ten-week series – a total of 50,000 humane education comics.

Humane education is a vital part of PATH’s long-term strategy to improve the lives of animals in Nicaragua. Providing children the opportunity to identify with animals through cartoon characters is a sure method of improving their treatment of real animals. Once produced these comics will be available for free to teachers, parents and humane organizations around the world. Please help us cover the expense of printing by making a donation today.

We often use pictures of animal suffering to communicate the depth of the needs of nonhuman animals in Nicaragua. I think it is important to remind you that not all animals in Nicaragua are suffering and thanks of your assistance PATH is making progress there. So here's a picture of a little guy who recently received treatment at our Granada clinic. It is truly only through your generosity and encouragement that PATH can provide services to animals in need. I'm certain if this puppy could speak he would thank you for all you've done for the animals of Nicaragua. Please allow me to thank you on behalf of all of Nicaragua's animals – PATH staff and volunteers are continually humbled by the generosity of our friends and supporters.

Please make a donation now and allow us to continue helping many of the globes most vulnerable animals. Your donation is tax-deductible and your credit card information is safe on our secure server. CLICK TO DONATE NOW http://www.justgive.org/giving/donate.jsp?charityId=17787

Enjoy the summer!
