Hello friends,
Earlier this year PATH introduced you to Marina and Eduardo – two amazing individuals who have rescued and rehabbed thousands of animals in Nicaragua. PATH supporters responded to their request for help and provided Nicaragua’s El Zoologico Nacional with a tranquilizer gun, water pumps, and a refrigerator and microwave. Thanks to your generosity the animals at El Zoologico Nacional can be safely tranquilized for medical procedures, enjoy clean water at any time and have their food safely cooled and/or heated.

Read about Marina and Eduardo in PATH's May 2006 Newsletter - http://www.ppath.org/newsletter/2006may.htm

This is Samantha, one of the many heartwarming stories at El Zoologico Nacional. Samantha is a three-year-old jaguar born on April 6, 2003. Wildlife traders kept Samantha’s mother confined to a 6’ x 6’ cage without ventilation and water. Samantha’s mother was not fed on a regular basis - her “keepers” told police she usually just got a horse bone several times a week.

Samantha’s mother was near death when police brought her to El Zoologico Nacional. Marina and Eduardo nursed the pregnant jaguar with a diet of love, vitamins, fresh chicken and beef. The adult jaguar survived and gave birth to two cubs. Samantha’s brother died at birth. Samantha, born extremely under weight and missing a front limb had no chance of surviving if released into the wild. Vulnerable to all other big cats - Samantha would need to spend her life in a single enclosure at El Zoologico Nacional.

The Zoologico is overpopulated with abandoned, injured and abused animals and lack the funds to provide Samantha with a safe private outdoor enclosure. Marina and Eduardo were forced to place Samantha in a concrete quarantine area. Despite her isolation Samantha is a happy and playful cat. She is a small, smart Jaguar who has obviously been raised by loving humans; she chirps when her handlers are near and holds up her front paw to signal she wants her belly scratched.

PATH hopes to provide Samantha with a new outdoor enclosure at El Zoological Nacional. Samantha’s enclosure will include running water, a safe and easily reachable perch, and plants and trees from her natural habitat. A larger enclosure will allow Samantha to enjoy sunshine, night breezes, and exercise. There will be educational displays adjacent to the enclosure informing the public how illegal wildlife trade harms both the animals and people of Nicaragua. Once settled in Samantha will have a new job - her amazing spirit and striking beauty will remind visitors of the value of all living creatures, despite physical or emotional differences.

Samantha’s new enclosure can only happen with your help. Please make a monetary donation today to help provide this amazing cat with a beautiful new living space.

In other news PATH is excited to welcome Dr. Mishkat Al-Moumin to our board of directors. Dr. Mishkat Al-Moumin is a renowned human rights lawyer and environmental activist. As the Minister of the Environment of the Interim Iraqi Government (2004-2005) she designed the Iraqi ministry of the environment, developed environmental laws, and led campaigns supporting Iraqi people living in environmentally dangerous areas, as well as initiating and leading numerous environmental awareness and cleanup projects. During her term the ministry of the environment issued the Report on the Environmental Status of Iraq – the first in the country’s history.

Prior to joining the Iraqi government, Mishkat was the Women's Issues Director for the Free Iraq Foundation, where she successfully advocated for women to hold 25 percent of the seats in the new Iraqi parliament. In 2004, Dr. Al-Moumin worked with the International Federation of Election Systems as an advisor on the elections in Iraq. She is also the founder and the director of Women and the Environment – an Iraqi civil service organization.

Dr Al-Moumin holds a MPA from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, as well as a MA and Ph.D. in public international law from the University of Baghdad. Dr. Al-Moumin is currently a visiting scholar at the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, D.C.

We are honored to have a professional of Mishkat’s stature join our organization.

The number of animals we help is limited by available resources. In other words, the greater our resources, the more animals we can help. PATH needs your continued financial support. We need donations of airline frequent flyer miles. We need veterinarians to donate equipment and supplies that they can do without. Please consider helping us bring comfort and love to Samantha and other suffering animals. PATH administrative staff receive no compensation – with the exception of local Nicaraguan employees, PATH is an all-volunteer 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt organization.
