April 24, 2006 Hello friends, Earlier this month PATH provided free veterinary care to more than 140 working horses in Granada, Nicaragua. These horses were treated by veterinarian Tom Parker with the assistance of PATH staff veterinarian Pedro Caballero. Dr. Parker, from Santa Fe, New Mexico spent his vacation working side-by-side with horse owners, local veterinary students and PATH and Building New Hope volunteers to provide these horses with desperately needed veterinary care.
In the coming months PATH, in partnership with Universidad de Ciecias Comerciales (UCC) and the city of Granada, Nicaragua will initiate a program in which PATH will supply free veterinary care to every working horse in Granada (1,200) and will then certify the horses as able to work, or in need of rest/care. Granada police will have the authority to request a PATH health certificate from working horse owners and demand the horse be examined and treated (at no cost) by PATH before the horse can return to work. This program will be friendly to both the horses and the horse owners – many of whom survive only through the income generated by the horses. We believe this innovative program is the first of its kind in the Americas, if not globally. Our equine health certification program in Granada, our on-going free veterinary clinics throughout the country, and continued education efforts promise to vastly improve the lives of people dependent upon their horses to make a living, as well as the horses themselves. Earlier this year PATH partnered with UCC to produce and distribute 30,000 free Spanish language horse care brochures throughout Nicaragua.
The success of this program will encourage other cities and organizations to use the model to further the physical and emotional well-being of horses throughout Central America. Dr. Parker’s selfless donation of time and talents brought unimaginable relief to nearly 150 beautiful horses. He also provided dozens of invaluable teaching hours to UCC veterinary students - students who will be providing care and comfort to Nicaragua’s animals in the coming decades. PATH thanks Dr. Parker for sharing his compassion and wisdom with the people and animals of Nicaragua.
We are limited in the number of animals we can help only by available resources. In other words, the greater our resources, the more animals we can help. We need your continued financial support. We need donations of American Airlines Advantage miles. We need veterinarians to donate equipment and supplies that they can do without. Please consider helping us bring comfort and love to these and other suffering animals. PATH administrative staff receives no compensation – with the exception of local Nicaraguan employees, PATH is an ALL-VOLUNTEER 501©3 tax-deductible organization. Please send your donation to: Sincerely, Kelly Overton, MPH
