November 2, 2005 Greetings from Boston! The leaves have changed and we have already had our first snow fall. I want to use the November newsletter as an opportunity to share some exciting news regarding PATH and the programs we operate. I am thrilled to tell you about the upcoming first annual PATH Heroes To Animals Awards! With these awards PATH will acknowledge individuals, organizations and companies that have made the world a better place for animals in 2005. The recipients will be announced both on our website and by press release in early December. In January, I will be appearing on national television in Nicaragua (details to be announced) to discuss existing PATH projects in the country, as well as to announce an exciting new program in which PATH will provide veterinary school scholarships to qualified, dedicated, animal loving Nicaraguan students. In addition, PATH will initiate a social marketing program in Nicaragua featuring print advertisements that aim to lessen violence against animals. To learn more about our programs go to http://www.ppath.org/whatwedo.htm We are a few major pieces of equipment shy of having our Granada clinic fully stocked. We remain in need of an anesthesia machine and a pulse/ox monitor. A list of our current and ongoing needs is at the end of this newsletter. Please continue to check with your local veterinarians, friends and family to see if any of the needed items are available. ![]() I want to offer a delayed thank you to Dr. Robin Brennen, DVM. Dr. Brennen spent a week in Granada with PATH in late August. While in Granada, Dr. Brennen designed veterinary protocols and best practices for our clinic; Her work will allow PATH to increase efficiency, cut costs and care for more animals. Ever the model of flexibility, Robin bottle fed kittens, treated street dogs, solved a flea problem at a local barrio school and held a clinic for working horses. Here is a picture of her in action. Thank you Robin! Another expression of gratitude is due to many of you who generously donated to our hurricane Katrina fund. PATH has sent over $13,000 to the LA-SPCA, provided financial assistance to Faust Veterinary Clinic in Slidell, Louisiana, and donated and delivered nearly 500 lbs of cat food into Katrina affected areas. The LA-SPCA will be contacting many of you to express their gratitude for your kindness. We will soon have some great items on the site for a holiday auction. All of the auction items/services have been donated and proceeds will go directly toward animal care in Nicaragua. If you or your company can donate additional items please contact us via email at animalpath@aol.com. If you are not able to participate in the auction please remember to make PATH a part of your holiday (and end of tax year) giving. We need to receive $10,000 in donations this holiday season to continue operating our PATH programs in Nicaragua. With your help we are improving the lives of animals in one of our hemispheres poorest countries; to continue and to further improve the lives of animals globally we need your support this holiday season. You can donate to PATH now by clicking here. Finally, I want to congratulate PATH’s Director of Latin American Programs; Maria Magaña, who on October 8th, 2005 married her long time partner Aaron Miller. Also, we want to welcome a new member to the PATH family. PATH board member Dr. Betsy VanderVelde is the proud mother to a new kitten, Lil’ Red VanderVelde, both mother and kitten are doing fine. PATH is in the process of adding a Family Page to our new and improved website; please forward us pictures of your animal companions. We can post them on our site; remember to include their first and last names, as well as their city of residence.
